Scribena, goddess of writing

Description

Drawn for the Create a Deity contest: [link]

Scribena, as the goddess of writing, presides over the written forms of every language. (Those that have written forms, of course. She's still working on those.) She is a sensible kind of goddess, her hair in a ponytail to keep it out of her work. (she gets annoyed when something's in her face when she's trying to think, and we don't want an annoyed goddess for the sake of aesthetics, now do we?) Her clothes are comfortable, since she shares the belief held by the first writing civilizations that good writing is for those who have the privilege be relaxed. (She does understand, however, that her gift can be used practically, as well) Her robe has languages of the world all over it, and her underskirt is an inky black. She is currently using a wax tablet and pen, one of the less permanent but nevertheless handy utensils in her arsenal.

Though she originally maintained close relations with her sister, the goddess of art, they have begun to drift apart as Scribena's languages become decreasingly symbolic. (One of the last sticklers being China.)

She is less strict than one would suppose, and welcomes slang, as she knows from centuries of experience that slang leads to the evolution of a language, no matter how frowned upon in the present tense.

ahh, Scribena was fun to create. Her name comes from the oldish English word for a secretary or scribe, scrivener, and I just said it with a Japanese accent, basically xD; The feather represents quill pens. It's really the only goddessy-surreal thing she allows in her wardrobe... anything else is just too cumbersome.

The languages chosen (Greek, Chinese, Egyptian heiroglyphs, Hebrew, and a smattering of European extra letters,) depended only on what language books I could find in the children's room of the library I work at xD; I was behind the desk as a stand-in during story hour, so I decided to give myself something to do and copied down the few languages I could find :P Dang, Hebrew has a lengthy alphabet! I didn't even bother with the vowels, my hand was starting to hurt from replicating all the calligraphic effects xD

I love her hair xD I could never pull it off, myself, I don't like to wear high ponytails, but I definitely liked the graceful sweep~ her hair ended up with xD

BIG FILE IS BIG. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Scribena is (c) me :D
