So today I went to the book store.

I'm in need of a sketchbook, and it was driving me crazy, and I knew this store has them, so I decided to check it out.

They didn't have any that I liked (I'm picky), so I was about to leave when I thought "hang on, they have a teeny tiny manga shelf here, right? And FB's last volume comes out this month, so..." I went to check.

And there it was.

I snatched it up and bought it faster than you can blink. xD;

And I've recently finished reading it.

...

Ahhhh... I'm a little emotional about it... It's like a chapter of my life is wrapping up, y'know? Fruits Basket was my first manga, and it got me into everything that led to this deviantart account, when I think about it...

And now it's over. Yeah, it's technically been over for like a year and change, but I was stubborn and wanted to read the tankoubon.

Hrm. Tokyopop's slipping, but I guess they kind of always were low-quality without seeming so...

So yeah, it made me all warm and fuzzy inside, and I hope I can geek out with someone about it soon.<3 I'M LOOKIN AT YOU, KEL AND LS-CHAN!

Yup, just this month.

Ahhh I remember when someone I met on a ferry showed it to me, and told me to get them... I didn't buy the first volume for months, but when I did, I took to the backwards thing instantly, and read it all the way home by the streetlights...<3

Tokyopop seems to have had a brief era of quality (the CCS manga I have, which isn't the original Mixx/Chixx/Tokyopop version, is of this era) and then crashed back into yuck. If Fruits Basket is handled like SM was...then zomg. >_>

only the first CSS series, too, the second one is sub-par...

Their printing quality wavers, they barely translate sound effects, and I've noticed a curious thing they do in which they take the original tankoubon, which is much smaller than the American one, and zoom in so much that stuff is cut off from the edges of the American version. It makes me mad D:

Well, I've got the box set for the first arc and its super high quality. The "Master of the Clow" ones were the ones they released with the glossy character art just inside if you had early editions, and it seems faithful enough.

Sound effects can be REALLY hard to translate though. "Jiri" or "Jirijiri", which refers to someone sneaking or inching foward. "Sneak sneak" gives the wrong impression. XD

I know the Mixx and Chixx era were absolute disasters. The SM manga is a total travesty.

The Kingdom Hearts manga was a total crap and a half, but that may have been the manga they had to work with. Although the fact that they didn't keep the Japanese right to left format itself annoyed the hell out of me.

All twelve of my CSS manga are right to left. And some of the best manga I've ever seen.

I've got some Japanese tankoubon (Pocket Monsters Special Volumes 1+2) and they are the exact same size as all of my CCS ones. However, the Tsubasa ones are larger. >_>

But the Japanese one has decidingly different paper quality and it smells more like a BOOK, which is awesome. X3

The Master of the Clow arc is ok, but it seems to show influences from the older translation, like Sakura saying "Phwee." It just doesn't make sense for her to say thaaaaat OTL

GLOSSY CHARACTER ART?? lucky ;_;

Yeah but they don't even subtitle "sneak sneak" in ;_;

Nobody even has the license to Sailor Moon anymore...! Maybe someone will pick it up for old time's sake...

Perhaps the KH manga was never right to left? I think Disney commissioned that manga specifically for their American audiences, and they thought that it should be left to right ^^;

I have one Fruits Basket takoubon and one CCS, and they're both smaller than the American releases.

Yeeeah, and the Japanese ones have dust jackets! 8D
